West Philly Radical History: Lessons from the Movement for a New Society
The Movement for a New Society was a national network of feminist radical pacifist collectives based in Philadelphia that existed from 1971 to 1988. The organization made important contributions to anti-nuclear, ecology, and sexual liberation movements while pioneering and promoting many forms of activity—building counter-institutions, waging strategic direct action campaigns, and unlearning oppressive behavior—that anti-authoritarian social movements take for granted today.
Former members Lynne Shivers, George Lakey, Betsy Raasch-Gilman, Bob Irwin, and Nancy Brigham will discuss the history and political practice of the Movement for a New Society, relate lessons learned from their experience, and then open the floor for an intergenerational dialogue on movement building today.

"Curatorial Conversations: Curating and Risk"
In this time of so many insecurities a panel focused on the topic of risk seeks to consider the questions of what is a risky project/idea—financial, political, artistic, intellectual, aesthetic, moral, personal, organizational, conceptual, and administrative? Rather than turn towards safety, is there a creative release of ideas when risk is invited rather than avoided? What range of thinking can be opened when risk is embraced? What risks have you taken? Why was it worth it? How do you assess the successes and failures of risky projects, risky ideas? What are the moral and ethical implications of taking risks? What is at stake? These questions frame the discussion as they relate to cultural institutions. As cultural producers, artists and curators directly reflect issues, ideas and concerns pertinent to the times we live in.
Featured panelists:
SHERYL CONKELTON, Philadelphia based curator, formerly curator at Temple Gallery/Tyler School of Art, Museum of Modern Art, NY and Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Separations Anxiety at Space 1026
Separations Anxiety, Printmaking At Space 1026 presents the diverse range of prints and printed materials made by the 25+ members of our Philadelphia collective. Fundamental to our creative process, this exhibition exposes our printmaking methods (and madness) presenting finished prints alongside the materials used to make them. Hand cut rubilith, whiteout drawings, photocopies, hand drawn ink positives, and even relief printed acetate; if it is out there, 1026ers have tried it. All this plus test prints, and the of course, the much coveted SUPER RARES. Freaking awesome! Oh and zines, heck yeah. If it's print related, we'll be showing it.

In Conversation: Kiki Smith and the Curators of Philagrafika
Carefully manipulating fragile sheets of Nepalese paper sparkling with silver leaf and mica, Kiki Smith installed two walls of PAFA’s gallery with an array of small and large-scale works, building a frieze at once intimate and also universal. In conversation with Jose Roca, Philagrafika’s Chief Curator and Artistic Director, and Julien Robson, Curator of Contemporary Art at PAFA, Smith discusses the major themes in her work and an ongoing interest in printmaking techniques and processes, about which she says that “Prints mimic what we are as humans: we are all the same and yet every one is different. I think there's a spiritual power in repetition, a devotional quality, like saying rosaries.”
Seating is limited so pre-registration is required. Admission is free for those with PAFA membership cards; free after museum admission for the public. To reserve a seat, please rsvp to 215-972-2105 or email mzimmerman@pafa.org.

Graphically Illuminated
Using printed graphics as a visual language, these films offer an excellent example of the imaginative powers of some of the most highly regarded experimental filmmakers of the 20th century. Found and re-appropriated images mingle onscreen, energized by the kinetic energy of the cinema. Though their methods vary, each filmmaker imbues their work with a unique sense of whimsy balanced by a rigorous approach to structure. Viewed separately, each of these films is a world unto itself. Collected in this series they demonstrate the possibilities of using printed images for a decidedly unconventional approach to animated storytelling.
