Marginal Utility inc. is a Philadelphia printmaking project and gallery space that works with local and international artists. Marginal Utility also hosts the Machete group, which consists of a Philly-centric art-zine, and a seminar/lecture series that focuses current philosophical and theoretical thought.

For Philagrafika 2010

Marginal Utility invited a group of artists to produce editions of prints that are presented and distributed through Marginal Utility, where 1/3 of the proceeds are donated to charities or organizations of the artist's choosing. The editions are printed by Prints of Darkness in NYC, under the watchful eye of master printer Rob Swainston.

Marc Andre Robinson: The Diachronic

On view through March 28th, 2010. In The Diachronic exhibition, Robinson provides an installation that addresses desire and loss through references to events that traverse personal and collective memories. The central motif of the exhibition is a toy blue gorilla. As a child Robinson watched this toy mysteriously vanish only to periodically return in other forms throughout the artist s life.

About the Machete Group

The Machete Group organizes workshops, mini-seminars, reading groups, screenings and other events open to the public that have as their general focus the intersection between artistic practice and its theoretical articulation. The guiding proposition of the Machete Group is the claim that practice without theory is empty and theory without practice is blind. The goal of the center is to engender a rigorous and open atmosphere outside a strictly academic context that encourages autodidacticism, a willingness to question all forms of mastery and specialization, and the desire to think critically about artistic practice in an historically, socially and politically astute manner.
