Rate of Return

Rate of Return explores the question of value and repetition through the multiple. Does frequency, quality, availability, and quantity of images affect and effect our relationships to objects, people, and their meaning? Do we take for granted the very notion of availability, and repeatability today? The work in the upper gallery looks at commodity, personal connection, rarity, and meaning as the basis for exploring how we relate to objects and individuals. The work of Jon Cox through the lens and the process of tintypes, explores abstraction and nostalgia through nature. Jared Mimm looks at our relationship to each other through the repetition and mimicry of an act of laughter. Steven Earl Weber uses porcelain, gold, and clay to call to mind our personal and social relationship to work.  In addition, UD@Crane has been fortunate enough to partner with Silicon Gallery Fine Arts Prints Ltd in displaying limited edition books of their collection by artists such as Francesco Clemente, Jane Hammond, John Ashbury, and Susan Bee.  The upper level gallery will also feature work from University of Delaware Students.

In the lower level gallery "Copy Center" will continue the exploration of the multiple in an interactive installation. An idea of Troy Richards, co-curator and implemented and expanded by Rebekah Wilhelm, University of Delaware MFA student, "Copy Center" uses the device, familiarity, and quality of the photocopy as a tool for social artistic development. Visitors to the gallery will be able to use the copy center machine to complete the installation of the space.

Brand, Re-brand, De-brand? is a portfolio of printed works that complicate (and possibly undermine) the idea of artist as brand in the artworld marketplace.
