Duke Riley, Those About to Die Salute You, 2009
Duke Riley’s performance extravaganza was fashioned after a Naumachia or a Roman live naval battle, which in this case was set as a battle between education staff from museums of the five boroughs of New York who built the ships and manned (womanned) them. Duke flooded one of the reflecting pools, which had remained dry since the 1964 Wolrds Fair, and built inside it a theatrical set that resembled a Roman Colysseum, which was used as a backdrop for the action.
Duke is currently planning a public happening that will occur during Philagrafika 2010.
